Recently some older members of our family shared their memories of visits to Tintern and the surrounding area. The rest of this post is their’s. With thanks to Grenville and Dorothy:-
“In 1956 we had a fortnight’s holiday in a camping coach at Tintern. This gave us a good base from which to explore the surrounding countryside including the Forest of Dean, Symonds Yat, Monmouth, Chepstow and Offa’s Dyke. The trains were still running then and as we had a very young child in the party the stationmaster kindly got the train driver to stop occasionally short of the station so that we could have a quantity of hot water from the engine for nappy-washing !”
“The approach to the station at Tintern was remarkable on summer evenings for the display of lights in the hedges of the approach – caused by thousands of glow-worms”
“Symonds Yat was an attractive view-point not only for being able to see a bend in the river to advantage, but also the occasional steam train puffing up the valley”
